now, here is an important piece of news:
the austrian foreign department reportedly advised its embassy in tokyo to promote the new expression オーストリー (ôstorî) instead of the common japanese word オーストリア (ôsutoria) to prevent confusion with the term for australia オーストラリア (ôsutoraria). in addition to well-grounded doubts about wether the japanese will ever adopt this neologism, a creeping feeling of unfairness arises. as a concerned austrian in japanese grammatics class put it: "why should austria change it's japanese denotation? after all we were here before the australians, weren't we?"

if you ever wondered what daruman has been up to in the course of this past month, well, i can tell you that he just sat his mid-term tests, that he is increasingly in love with his studies and that he has found himself a nice job. maybe this explains why, contrary to any rumours you might have heard, he is still single. any further details are, of course, strictly classified.

nebenbei

transition completed

if on the way home from three months' travelling in southamerica your backpack suddenly decides to spend the night at beautiful new york jfk airport, the best thing to do is to keep cool and to calmly look for a new set of garments that better fit the latest fashion than your worn traveller's clothes. i dare say you will find something you like in one of the 50 h&m stores in the city near your home town...

residents of european countries having returned from the american continent often suffer from a condition commonly known as "jet lag". the usual jet lag symptoms such as general tiredness combined with insomnia added to daruman's cultural confusion: cars slowing down from top speeds to let him cross the street, tap water tasting ten times better than bottled water in bolivia, eating fresh salad without fear of food poisoning, no problems paying your coffee with a 100 franc bill nor flushing down the toilet paper. if you did not know, here it is again: we live in a society of lavishness and carelessness.

when daruman returned to his viennese flat a week ago he felt like opening a new chapter in his life putting the lid on two years of uncertainty and emotional dependence. cruising southamerica rounded off something you might call a period of transition. daruman is happy to be, for the moment, master of his own heart, he has a rather accurate map of the immediate future and the ambition to reach his goals. thus he begins his second year in vienna.

break (the dream)

a sudden fever attack has put daruman out of the course of every day life for two days. it was his body's response to the yellow fever vaccination he received a week ago. one of several other vaccinations he has to take to be prepared for his travel plans this summer: three months in ecuador, peru and bolivia. with his beloved snowgirl, of course.
the two day break brought about a strange state of mind. to be torn away from studying, lying in bed long hours, hot with aching limbs, made daruman dream again. made him see where he once was, where he will go. a feeling of beeing afloat in the stream of time and feeling the urge to let go of everything, to just let himself be taken away.
tomorrow daruman will be attending his lectures again. a dire prospect. after only two days of absence from university life all academical aspirations seem so far away. one thing positive about the experience: daruman is no longer afraid of having to quickly get used to a completely different lifestyle when getting off that plane in quito come july. it will be just like a sudden fever attack. only it will last till september this time.

kaffeepause

remedy against homesickness

sports. football, that is. although it did not feel like the real thing, of course, watching the crucial match switzerland vs. turkey in the 2006 world cup qualification's relegation on a german channel (yeah, it is actually possible to miss beni turnheer's commentary) sitting on a couch in austria. but hey, football connects the world.

on the other hand, living in vienna is certainly working in daruman's favor when it comes to his in dept knowledge of the german language. together with the little detour to german drama schools and his being a native speaker of the swiss german standard studying in austria completes daruman's experience with language use in all centers of the german speaking community.

germans often describe the austrian standard as cute because of their frequent use of diminutive suffixes in nouns (e.g. -erl) , whereas to austrians germans in their way of speaking sound quite arrogant. as a result, some austrians seem to suffer from an inferiority complex regarding their language. an acclaimed and much celebrated rivalry exists here comparable to the feelings between speakers of different dialects in switzerland.

something daruman's professor in german communication will have to explain him soon: what is that swiss german standard supposed to be anyway? daruman knows, of course, that it is bernese, but he would like to have it confirmed by an austrian expert on german standards...

ideas

as you might remember, daruman recently complained about the rather high frequency of official catholic holidays in austria. until a few days ago he was quite unhappy with his timetable at university, as well. that is mainly due to his having absolutely no troubles following the japanese lessons at the institute for japanology (although it must be hell for beginners, and there are many of them!). therefore, all the time he initially had held free to study japanese somehow went wasted. daruman simply did not know what to fill it up with (except watching startrek voyager). until now.

from this day on this weblog will not only inform dear people back home about his doings in far away vienna, but it will itself do its part in daruman's formation as a communications expert and translator, serving as platform and motivation to improve his text production and translation skills in both english and german.
in this first step, daruman starts to write his blog entries alternately in german and english. later on, he plans to start a second blog for the purpose of publishing a translation into the other language of each post of the original blog. and if, in a third stage, his skills in japanese ever come close to those in the other languages (and they should within 4 semesters) he will even provide his interested readers, it is obvious enough, with a translation of his blog in japanese.

so he has plenty to do now. support his efforts by posting loads of interesting comments. it is the best motivation he can get to keep writing. and unlike him, you may do it in every language you like...

souhung*
