aus übungszwecken hat daruman einige begriffe und sprachbilder aus einem kommentar zu dieser aussage, der in einer österreichischen tageszeitung erschienen ist, herausgesucht und paraphrasiert.

• jemand der in ein delikt verwickelt ist, hat in irgendeiner form bei einem verbrechen mitgewirkt.

• wer sich ein gesetz bastelt, erstellt sich ein gesetz allein zu seinem eigenen nutzen.

• das bild der triefenden lefzen steht hier für die vorfreude auf einen grossen gewinn, ein grosses geschäft.

• wenn ein land am rande undemokratischer verhältnisse dahintaumelt, hat es zwar als staatsprinzip die demokratie, aber in gewissen bereichen mangelt es mit der umsetzung (z.b. freie meinungsbildung, freie wahlen).

working morale

daruman has started to ask himself whether he has earned the life he is living. he feels he has never done anything to deserve all the privileges he lives with. and he feels there are a whole lot of other people who should start asking themselves the same question. if we all stopped enjoying and distracting ourselves once in a while, if we all sat down for one hour a day to use our individual talents for the sake of the community, we would live to see the world change into a better place. this is all it takes.
if you are inclined to despair in the face of such responsibility, stop thinking about it. just sit down and work.

mein viertel

neulich im drogeriemarkt am max-winterplatz: als daruman nach batterien fragt, dirigiert ihn die verkäuferin einen gang hinunter vor ein regal, in dem er weiß gott keine batterien entdeckt. er ist verlegen und nötigt die frau im weißen kittel dazu, mühsam von der kasse zu ihm zu kommen. "hier", sagt sie, "sehen sie", und zeigt auf eine lücke in der auslage mit feuchtigkeitscrèmes. "die nächste lieferung kommt morgen." unter der leeren stelle steht fett gedruckt ein preis, und ganz klein "vaseline".
in diesem viertel wohnt daruman. wo vaseline mangelware ist, und wo die drogeriefrau, wenn sie die frage eines jungen schneemannes nicht versteht, erst einmal annimmt, dass er vaseline will.

shortcut: the uk on 91 pages

so far, daruman has never had the chance to warm to the british. actual points of reference were scarce (apart from the language, a short city trip to london some years ago and a 4 hour stopover in london heathrow). however, as expertise in languages comprises extensive cultural knowledge of the countries where these languages are spoken, he is bound to create such points of reference from scratch.
on monday daruman will take a test the preparation for which has led him to slog through the script of a lecture treating basic cultural aspects such as geography, legal system and history since 1400 of a nation called "united kingdom of great britain and northern ireland". 91 pages of very dense and concise reading but not boring, at all.
well, let me sketch the general circumstances of the upcoming exam. first, one has to take into consideration that daruman has not once attended the respective lecture which was held last semester. this should not, however, affect his performance in the test, as questions from previous exams on the same script, which do not seem to have changed over the last six years, are easily accessible on the internet. secondly, i am afraid to say that daruman's motivation to take this exam on such short notice is founded on difficulties regarding the progression of his studies rather than on actual interest. he only managed to obtain places in two of the five exercise courses he is still required to complete in order to proceed to the so called "main programme". with the prospect of having to attend three time-consuming exercise courses next semester daruman has to take advantage of this possibility to cover the culture part for english of the "initial programme" already in the present semester. if he had been given the choice he would rather have attended the lecture on the culture of the usa but, alas, such activity is not provided at present.

well, i ask him, what d'you want? there's still the option of your going to london for your master studies. just consider it culture shock prevention!
